VOTE FOR JONNY!!!

Posted in Uncategorized on March 14, 2011 by dogstarbrixton

We have some truly creative staff working at the dog and one of the old timers, Jonathan Hood is getting involved with the online hype game to promote his sculptures. Saatchi Gallery have been running a series of competitions from their website giving the winners their own exhibition! After making it to the top few hundred (out of several thousand) Jonny’s decided to enter another piece into a second competition and HE NEEDS YOUR HELP!

His work is amazing. He creates larger than life sculptures out of common objects such as cable ties, records, vhs tapes, beer mats…

The piece in this month’s competition is a tower of cassette tapes, titled Soundpiece:

Help him get through to the next round by CLICKING HERE scrolling down the left hand side of his profile page and and clicking on the ‘vote here’ link. You can sign in with Facebook or email, it’s quick and easy. Let’s get him onto the winners list and featured in Saatchi’s gallery!

NUCLEAR DAWN 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Posted in Uncategorized on March 10, 2011 by dogstarbrixton

A few Sundays ago marked the 30th anniversary of the famous Brixton mural, Nuclear Dawn which is a stone’s throw from the Dogstar on Coldharbour Lane. This photo taken in 1981 taken after the mural’s completion even has a glimpse of the old Atlantic pub sign.

To celebrate this incredible piece of work The London Mural Preservation Society brought the community together along with the artists, Dale McCrea and Brian Barnes (who were reunited for the first time in 25 years!), for a talk, some films, drinks and stroll down to the Mural itself.

FINNISHED

One of our longest serving barmen is flying the nest. The potty-mouthed yout, Finn, who’s been working at the dog for the best part of 2 years is off to dig for gold in stockwell.

As well as being a trusty barman he’s a badboy DJ, poet and songwriter and wray & nephew fanatic. Check his FINNTASTIX site and tune into this mix!

GODSPEED HOMESLICE!

THE STREETS AFTERMATH

Posted in Uncategorized on March 7, 2011 by dogstarbrixton

Sooo we just had the busiest weekend on record! Big shout out to Mike Skinner for putting us on The Streets’ map…needless to say, we’re still suffering the hangover from necking too much brandy and the few drips of beer that were left over on saturday.

Sadly it’s farewell to The Streets. The Brixton Academy show was their last ever but they’ll still get played each weekend in the dog. Such a legendary band, we hope they reform soon!

Thanks to Disastronaut, Blonde Ambition, Joshyou_are, The Seaside Tribe, Librarians Wanted & all who came down to party.

CRAFTY FOX POP UP MARKET II

Posted in Uncategorized on January 25, 2011 by dogstarbrixton

In December we were mad busy and one of the biggest highlights was the CRAFTY FOX POP UP XMAS MARKET which saw 1500 people walking through the doors and into a wonderland of high quality handmade arts, crafts, clothes and more with workshops, DJs and food and drinks to boot! Watch this video for a reminder of the event: –

We very pleased to announce the 2nd Crafty Fox Pop Up Market will be taking place at the dogstar on 16th April at The Dogstar, over three floors, fully sponsored by ETSY.COM and featuring a fully functioning cafe, more workshops and more stalls! We can’t recommend it highly enough, the quality of the products on sale was incredibly high and the amount of buzz it created was overwhelming. South London has been crying out for something like this for ages. For more info and updates visit their website.
